The Carter Project at NSU Art Museum, Fort Lauderdale, FL

This multi-media exhibition explores the extraordinary home, studio and exhibition space created by Miami artist Christopher Carter that serves as both a residence for his family and living laboratory for artistic pursuits. The largest, most comprehensive structure that Carter ever dreamed to make, the eco-conscious design challenges traditional materials in innovative ways and reflects Carter’s longstanding practice of using recycled woods, metals, glass and other materials, as well as his connections to Afrofuturism and the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic's embrace of imperfection. Integrated in the carbon footprint-reducing structures are repurposed shipping containers that house some of The Carter Project's living areas and art production studios.

“Christopher Carter approached the concepts of structure, environment and sustainability with the creativity and freedom of an artist. Having worked with other artists who ventured into architecture such as Frank Stella, Jorge Pardo and Julian Schnabel, I was intrigued by the idea of documenting and exhibiting his process in an exhibition since he first shared his vision with me in 2016. We hope that The Carter Project will inspire others to question conventions and imagine new solutions to living in today’s environment.” -Bonnie Clearwater, Director and Chief Curator, NSU Art Museum

Inter | Sectionality: Diaspora Art from the Creole City is a bold, multidisciplinary curatorial collaboration and exploration of the emergence of the “Creole City” as a local, regional and global phenomenon. Internationally recognized curators Sanjit Sethi, President, Minneapolis College of Art and Design and former director of the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design, and Rosie Gordon-Wallace, founder and curator of Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator (DVCAI), have designed this collaboration to provide a lens through which communities and community leaders internationally can begin to better understand themselves, their diversity and their unlimited possibilities.

Inter | Sectionality: Diaspora Art from the Creole City is presented in our nation’s capital at a time when diaspora artists and voices are challenging social justice, celebrating identities, and reactivating and bridging communities through contemporary art and scholarship. The complexities and diversities represented by this exhibit are emergent and, in many cases, ascendant across the world.

Exhibited Works: “Cross-Cultural Trap” and “Growth of Industry”
